Synthesizer - Reincarnation

SampleRobot Synthesizer Reincarnation Yamaha TX816 Inside A Korg wavestate | Photo By Christian Halten

Can a vintage Yamaha TX816 synthesier live inside a contemporary Korg wavestate? We did the experiment and sampled the custom 8 layer stack sound 'Electric Stinger' from Yamaha's hefty 128 voices FM flagship which was released in 1984.

The TX816 hides its power behind a black panel with red light emitting displays that can show numbers and cryptic messages. It's looks more like a James Bond self destruction mechanism or a control panel from a TIE Fighter than a musical instrument. Nevertheless it contains the sound engines of 8 classic first generation DX7 synthesizers famous for their beefy and rough digital sound.

So what happens if you capture this instrument and load the multisample in Korg's wavestate? First thing to notice is that in a 'Performance' you have layers A-D so you can have up to 4 times the TX816 stack playing at the same time with a single key press on the wavestate which produces quite a wall of sound.

We created a performance that contains the 'Electric Stinger' multisample from the original TX816 slightly detuned in layers A-D.

You can download the multisample, bank and performance for wavestate from this location.

If you would like to play the original TX816 sound without delay effect turn up the mod wheel. With aftertouch you can control the filter LFO modulation.

To transfer the files you need the Korg Sample Builder and wavestate Editor Librarian available as free download from the Korg site. Have fun playing the TX816 in your wavestate!

By the way, the upcoming version 7 of SampleRobot will support Korg's wavestate and modwave directly with a dedicated new multisample export.

While beta-testing version 7 in-house we received a lot of nice feedback from new SampleRobot users that we would like to share here.

I’ve been quite busy with sample robot spending countless hours to create a humongous library of my synth collection. It’s been allowing me to do the unthinkable with recreating my sounds and I really appreciate that there is so much thought put into this program in order to make the best results possible. Super happy with using it so far.

Looking very much forward to using Sample Robot Pro! I’m already loving the montage version as is, good job!

I love SampleRobot! Along with ConvertWithMoss, it allows me to save my VST sounds to my Korgs, MPC and maybe the MODXM soon.
